They come for the WOW!

What is it that makes you return to a website? What makes you subscribe to a blog’s feed? In some way the writer has connected with you. Something they wrote was different and more exciting than you have read before. If you want readers to find your blog, talk about your blog, and link like crazy to your blog, first you have to find out what they are looking for.

What is it that motivates a first time reader into becoming an active regular reader of your blog? What do they come to your blog for?

They come for the WOW!

If you can deliver the WOW in every article or post you write readers will return and bring more readers with them.

How do you WOW your audience? I’ll show you…

Are You Excited?

Wild Bill Excited!

If you are not excited about what you are writing, then why in the hell do you expect visitors to your site to be excited about reading what you wrote?

I was driving down the street headed to Wal-Mart when I came up with the idea for this post. I almost scared my wife to death when I screamed, “WOW, I just had an idea for a great post!” I can tell when a post is going to be one of my better ideas. I get this feeling like standing on top of a mountain, raising my arms to the sky, and announcing to the world, “I’m on top of the world!” Cheesy? Yeah I know it is but that is how I feel. I’m happy, energized, and ready to share my excitement with the world.

When you are writing your next post if you do not feel your heart beating a little faster, if you do not feel a giant smile stretching across your face, if you are not excited down to your very core, then chances are no one else will waste their time reading what you wrote. If you are not excited then you cannot infect anyone else with excitement.

Don’t Be Afraid To Shock Them!

The moments people remember are usually the most shocking moments.

I will never forget the night I was carjacked. It was my last day and last delivery as a pizza delivery driver. I pulled up to the house and walked up to the door just like I had done a thousands of times before. The next thing I knew I was staring into the barrel of a hand gun point directly at my head.

I could have died that night, I didn’t, but a part of me did die that night.

This could have been just another night that years later I couldn’t tell you what made it different than any other night in my life. It wasn’t, this was in fact one of those moments in your life that you will remember until the day you die. Up until that moment I don’t think I had ever faced the possibility of never living another day. I could have died that night, I didn’t, but a part of me did die that night. From that moment on I stopped holding back. I realized that any moment might be my last and that I had better get busy living instead of waiting to die.

It took the shock of having a gun pointed at my head to find out who I truly was. I am not suggesting you go out and find a crook to threaten your life, but ask yourself, “What if I die tomorrow?” How would you live your life differently? What do you want to say before you die? If you will write like this could be your last post, you just might shock one of your readers. This shock could change their life.

To grow you must change, to change sometimes you need to shock yourself and others. Don’t break any laws and don’t be afraid to shock your readers, they might just thank you for it and remember you.

More Ways To WOW Them…

Here is a list of more ways to WOW your reader:

  • Your headline is your first and often your last chance to convince a reader that you have something important to say. → Learn how to write a headline with WOW.
  • Tell them a story they won’t soon forget. — What moments in your life helped you learn an important lesson? Share it with your readers, your story might help them learn a lesson too. → 7 Stupid Blogging Mistakes I Made That I Hope You Don’t Make
  • Be passionate! — If you don’t care about what you are writing readers won’t care either. → How To Be A Passionate Blogger
  • If a reader takes the time to write you a comment, then take the time to respond to their comment. — Some of the biggest bloggers out there forget that once they were new bloggers commenting on someone else’s blog. Don’t you forget where you started.

Many people have stopped leaving comments on blogs. I believe one of the main reasons why, is people feel like the blog owners do not read their comments or take the time to respond to their comments. How long will you talk to a wall before you realize you are not going to get anywhere? WOW your readers, respond to them.

Have you come up with ways to WOW your readers? I’d love to discuss them with you. Looking forward to your comments.

  1. Loved the post, Wild Bill. I’m all into the shock factor. I think I lost a reader yesterday with one of my new posts though… Hehe… I still love the post regardless.

“WOW, I just had an idea for a great post!”

Our womens don’t usually “get” us bloggers, do they?

  2. WOW! What a great post, Wild Bill–very inspiring! It’s so important not to lose that spark in blogging–at least not if you want your readers to return again and again!

  3. Hey Bill
I love this post and I know just how you feel when you’re writing a post and REALLY ENJOYING IT. I will definitely follow you advice and pull back when I don’t “feel” what I’m writing. I wasn’t a blogger when you wrote this post but I am now and I am glad you’re back!
