I'm With Stupid!

You see lists all the time about the 10 biggest mistakes that bloggers make, well I’m sure there are more than 100, because I’ve made almost every blogging mistake you can make in my first year. Mistakes are only human, but repeating mistakes over and over is downright stupid. You can learn where others have failed. Here is a checklist of some of the stupidest blogging mistakes I have made.

My 7 Stupidest Blogging Mistakes Checklist

CheckMy spelling was horrible! — My spelling is still horrible, however I spend much more time now correcting errors before clicking the publish button.

CheckStarted with a free blogger blogspot blog instead of a hosted self owned site. — If you have a free blogger blog get your own hosted blog as quickly as you can. When one of my posts was linked by Drudge Report I got about 140,000 visitors in one day before my blogger account crashed. The amount of advertising money I lost would have paid for hosting for the rest of my life. My websites are now hosted with DreamHost. If you are ready to host your own blog I highly recommend DreamHost.

CheckStopped commenting on other people’s blogs. — If you want comments then give comments otherwise your readers might start thinking you hate them.

CheckSpent to much time writing about me instead of writing great articles for my readers. — Let’s face it your mother is probably the only person that reads your blog to find out what you are doing. More than likely even your mother doesn’t care about what your cat did today. There are so many me websites on the internet that your will probably be ignored just like theirs. Write original articles that benefit your readers and they will make your blog one of their must reads.

CheckBlogged almost 17 hours a day 7 days a week. — More is not always better and unless you are planning to never leave your house again you should learn to limit your time spent behind your keyboard. Stop cramming for a post like you are studying for a test.

Blogger burnout can happen to the best of us, I quit blogging for an entire year. Develop a blogging schedule stick to it and remember their is life offline as well as online.

CheckDid not encourage readers to subscribe to my feed. — Hmmm looks like I learned from that mistake, I hope you will too.

CheckMy blog was too general and my posting consistency was well…inconsistent. — Do your best to stick to a consistent blogging schedule. If you publish 20 posts in one day and then take a month off, when you get back you might find all of your readers have come to the conclusion that you are dead and went on with their online lives.

Like I said these are only a few of the hundreds of stupid blogging mistakes I’ve made. Let’s all learn from each others mistakes.

Question : What was your stupidest blogging mistake?

  1. Thanks so much! Great tips on those things that we, as bloggers, would do well to avoid! Insightful post!

    Regards,

  2. My biggest mistake (easily corrected) is Jackin up my brothers comments on another post. But it was funny! BigMike

  3. Good list. I think my biggest blogging mistake was assuming traffic would just show up on its own. actually there is a lot of participation in the blogosphere needed - and I’m enjoying that part a lot these days.

  4. Yeah, I’ve done a lot of those on that list. I also just subscribed to your RSS feed, so your changes worked ;-)

  5. After 8 years in the business and I started my first SEO blog just last night. I have always told people to make blogs to help gain traffic but never practiced what I was preaching. Always thought I was too busy to blog… but it’s fun. Thanks for the tips for my personal blog :)

  6. Wild Bill:

I would definitely have to say that mine was starting at Blogger.com I stayed with them for a year and a half! It was sort of like my training wheels but I finally decided to move to WP in October 07. It was scary as h*** and it forced me to start all over with the rankings and everything but I am happy where I’m at now. I thank God I finally scrounged the courage to do it.

P.S. I discovered you through Patricia over at Spiritual Journey of a Lightworker. I’m glad!

A few lines down from mentioning spelling mistakes, you have “Spent to much time writing about me instead of writing great articles for my readers.”–should read “spent TOO much time, not to much time”. Whoops.

  8. I have to admit, I’ve been a blogger for a decade now. I started when I ran an online game back in early 1997 (ran the game for almost 7 years) and then I started blogging on MSN Spaces and Myspace. But, really, as much as I enjoy blogging, I really want to do more and be able to use what I love to earn an income. This site looks interesting and motivating and I’ll try to apply this checklist as well!
    Thanks,
